A big thank you to Paramatta Council for the Support received to fund the 2013 Youth Week poetry workshops, masterclasses and final showcase.

The funding allowed for weekly ‘poetry corner’ to take place every Monday night at EYW’s Ramsgate drop in center, inspired ‘Unplugged’, an event that provided a platform for young talented artists to showcase their abilities in spoken word poetry, music and dance. This event took place at EYW’s Granville drop in center.

The Monday night ‘poetry corner’ was started by spoken word artist Nancy Louka, a campaign manager at the University of Sydney and long time volunteer and attendee of EYW. Nancy’s interest and experience in spoken word rekindled an interest in the art form and provided an avenue for writers and young people to express themselves, “We started with only 4 people attending the poetry corner and last week we had 16, it’s growing exponentially.”

‘Spoken word’ poetry is performance-based poetry that has gained a lot of attention in recent years, most probably due to viral Youtube videos surfacing from the US. Some notable poetry performances floating around include famous musicians like (Grammy winner) Lauryn Hill and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx performing their poetry to a live studio audience such as Def Jam.

Last week’s event, ‘Unplugged’, was quite popular, with talents wanting to put their names on the set list on the night. Organiser Nancy Louka stated, “The set list kept growing, we had more people signing up than we had room for.” But it was a successful night with positive feedback and requests “do it again”.

Headlining, was a 23 year old NSW state finalist, Ahmed Al-rady, who started a poetry slam for Bankstown’s community members. Ahmed also places great value on spoken word poetry saying ‘There’s a sense of community in poetry’ because ‘you start getting close to people you’re not even friends with, but because they know your stories, there’s a sense of communion.’

Unplugged attracted a diverse amount of community members who were all too eager to share their talent with each other. Whether it was singing, dancing or spoken word, the audience cheered on for more, creating a supportive environment for all involved. The response to EYW’s Unplugged has been promising and may encourage another event in the near future.

A promising meeting from the local council gives hope to an under-funded non-for profit organisation reaching out to marginalised youth. On Tuesday,Nickolas Varvaris, mayor of Kogarah, gave his time to the staff of Exodus YouthWorx in order to find out about the much-needed support they provide to the community. Vavaris immediately saw the importance of the vital role EYWhas taken on, saying that it ‘is one that the local council should be supporting’.Varvaris also shared his time with one of the clients of EYW before stating tha the is ‘keen to provide support’ by ‘lobbying at both the state and federal level ’for funding. With many youth suffering from mental illness and drug addictions, the staff of Exodus Youth Worx is grateful and relieved to have gained another supporter and a potential voice for their noble cause.

Last Sunday Exodus Youth Worx (EYW) organized another successful event and this month, EYW endeavored to raise awareness about their services within the local community. Scusi’s café was the chosen location and it seems to have been a good choice. Those who expected to stay for only an hour were in no hurry to leave, as the food and company made for a satisfying way to spend a warm Sunday afternoon. EYW showcased craftsmanship and musical talent to the local community, proving you don’t have to be a large organisation to make an impact in people’s lives. One of the musicians that performed stated that Exodus Youth Worx ‘…provides me with jamming spaces and singing lessons’. Evidently these services have given this aspiring singer and guitarist an avenue to pursue what he loves doing, in a safe and supportive environment.

During May EYW Held a three course fundraising lunch on the shores of Botany Bay at Georges River Sailing Club. EYW was able to conduct the event with the help of local businesses and community members who offered support and assistance in the forms of auction prizes, decorations, donations and catering. A special thank you to the Coptic community and also the wider community for their generous support. On the day it was our valued supporters that made the event os successful. EYW staff and volunteers are kept super busy seven days a week assisting young people turn their lives around and if it were not for the great people who sold tickets to this event it would not have happened, so a BIG THANK YOU to you! Also thank you to all those who volunteered on the day to help get the event rolling. With the grace of God and with the help of our very generous supporters EYW was able to raise much needed funds for our daily expenditure, these funds assist EYW in being one step closer to helping marginalised youth in our community.

Proposed projects include further self development programs, ongoing support through outreach programs and professional counseling services whilst also assisting an EYW member with the enrollment process of University for this coming semester. All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible and are very much appreciated. EYW relies solely on small community grants, fundraisers and donations to effectively support marginalised youth within our community. Your kind support and generous donations are sure to assist EYW sail the year ahead.
